In interviews with the newspaper, several students described an uncomfortable workplace culture that blurred the line between professional and personal relationships and said they often felt pressured to drink to excess at social events.
One woman said she felt like she was being tested at one gathering when a one of the professors put his arm around her and slid it down her body. The student said she felt so uncomfortable that she got up and went to the bathroom. Other students told the paper that Kelley encouraged his lab members to drink and socialize at least once a week, including on weeknights and sometimes during business hours. Connecticut College was established in New London, Connecticut in , and given that its seal prominently features a tree at its center, it’s probably no surprise to discover that there are plenty of them peppering the institution’s picturesque campus.
Thanks to movies like Animal House and Old School the very words conjure up pictures of wild parties and crazy college students, but these movies have created a picture that is not entirely accurate. Becoming involved in fraternity or sorority can be one of the best choices an undergraduate makes, as the Greek community becomes a family away from home. We have compiled a list of the best colleges and universities for Greek life — schools where participation is high, criminal offenses are low, and current Greeks are satisfied with their experience.
This ranking was made based on the following criteria: The university holds Greek chapters to a high standard, and over the past years has placed several chapters on suspension due to violations of the Student Code of Conduct; the Kappa Sigma chapter was restored to good standing at the beginning of fall semester Denison University was founded in and is a private, liberal arts college in Granville, Ohio, which is located 30 miles east of Columbus. The main reason these schools struggle is demographic. The number of high school graduates has been shrinking — and will continue to. Small private colleges across the country are struggling to survive, as the number of high-school-aged students declines and families are increasingly unwilling or unable to take on big student loans. Experts predict a major drop in the number of high school graduates overall after the year — especially in New England — because people have had fewer children since the economic recession.

Yet, without stellar content, journalism 2. Everything journalism was, is and will be rests on our ability to tell a story. And every story starts with an idea. To help get you started, below is a quick-hit, unending, hopefully indispensable, fun, fun, fun digital story ideas fountain. It is aimed at inspiring student journalists to localize, adapt and reinvent a range of stories — quirky and mainstream, text-based and visual, interactive and investigatory.
Many ideas come from your student press peers. Others originate with the professional press. And still others are pulled from independent journalists, viral videos and social media mavericks that catch my eye. Along with providing a barebones blueprint and some links for specific stories and features, the larger goal is one also found in my book Journalism of Ideas: I want to ensure j-students the world over have the confidence to come across any person, place, thing, event, trend, viewpoint, document, law, word or even a single letter and respond with an idea — a good one, a newsworthy one, one worth reporting.
I will update the list in somewhat real-time, as cool ideas cross my path. Have an idea for the list? What is a typical workday like for counselors serving various roles — in academics, health and other areas? And what are they specifically tasked with helping students and staff to cope with, avoid or overcome?
Six of the eight Ivy League universities consider their founding dates to be simply the date that they received their charters and thus became legal corporations with the authority to grant academic degrees. Harvard University uses the date that the legislature of the Massachusetts Bay Colony formally allocated funds for the creation of a college. Harvard was chartered in , although classes had been conducted for approximately a decade by then. The University of Pennsylvania initially considered its founding date to be ; this is the year which appears on the first iteration of the university seal.

November 18, 3: Every description should be taken with a grain of salt, and readers are encouraged to form their own opinions on different houses. The name refers to the giant wooden pole erected behind the house for daring students to climb, and the entire pig they roast and serve to partygoers. The physical house appears to be a more appropriate place for livestock than frat bros, however their backyard boasts a beach volleyball court rather than a pasture.
Brothers can be identified by their red baseball caps sporting their fraternity letters. Some claim to see lights on and ghostly sounds of revelry emanating from the house late at night, but such reports are unverified. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Eleazar Wheelock , Dartmouth College founder Dartmouth was founded by Eleazar Wheelock , a Congregational minister from Columbia, Connecticut , who had sought to establish a school to train Native Americans as Christian missionaries. The campus, often heralded for its collegiate architecture and landscape design, combines manicured lawns and Georgian-style buildings. Other notable scenic inclusions, like the tranquil Asian Garden with a Buddhist temple imported from Japan, contribute to the picturesque feel of Furman. Founded in , Furman holds the title of the oldest private university in the state. Students living on campus expect dorm rooms that are modern and up-to-date, providing necessary wiring for computers and other technological gadgets.
The key for many colleges with older campus buildings is to implement needed updates while maintaining the look and feel of tradition. A beautiful college campus can have a big impact on students and their learning experiences. As environmental issues become more important to students, colleges are re-shaping their campuses to meet the needs of the environment. Other schools are making classrooms more student-friendly with better seating and lighting. Gone are old desks and hard chairs, replaced with tables for groups complete with padded chairs.
Many colleges are limiting class sizes, enabling them to have classrooms that are less crowded in an attempt to create learning environments emphasizing personal instruction.

Junior linebacker Jake Moen came up with the stop on the two-point pass attempt, giving the Big Green its second victory over a ranked opponent in as many seasons and ninth straight over a non-conference team. Although the Crusaders scored a touchdown of their own one play after converting on fourth down for the sixth time in as many attempts, the Dartmouth defense sniffed out the screen pass on the two-point attempt with Moen making the initial hit and senior Danny McManus securing the stop to preserve the win.
Holy Cross held a one-point lead at the intermission, , that held up until the final minute of the third quarter. The Crusaders muffed a punt near midfield, which was recovered by McManus at the bottom of the pile. Two plays later, senior Ryder Stone , who finished with his second career yard game 17 carries, yards broke through the line and outraced the Holy Cross defense 44 yards to the end zone for a Big Green lead. That run also pushed him past 1, yards on the ground for his career, the 28th Dartmouth player to do so.
When it comes to picking a college, academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities all play an essential role, but the appearance and feel of a campus attracts students too.

Conclusions The Nature and Use of the Linear B Script Linear B is a principally syllabic script written with some 89 different signs which have been deciphered as representing both bare vowels i. In addition to the syllabic signs there are over one hundred ideograms signs representing physical objects, numerals, measures of weight and of liquid and dry volumes, and a variety of commodities. Forty-five of the Linear B syllabic signs have close equivalents in Linear A, while a further ten have more doubtful parallels in the older script.
There is therefore general scholarly consensus that Linear B was derived from Linear A for the purpose of writing a different, non-Minoan language which happens to have been deciphered as an early form of Greek. It is still unknown where, when, why, by whom, and under what circumstances the Linear B writing system was devised for this purpose although several suggestions have been proposed as solutions to each of these five fundamental questions. Linear B, in the form of sign groups which form words as opposed to isolated signs with a variety of possible significances, occurs in only two forms of text.
The first and most important consists of tablets of unbaked clay which have survived due to the fact that they were burned and hence crudely fired, usually in fires which destroyed the buildings in which they have been found. These tablets are of two principal types: The second form of Linear B text consists of painted inscriptions on ceramic vessels, for the most part large, coarse stirrup jars on whose shoulders between one and three words were painted before the vessels were intentionally fired.
Tablets have been found only at palatial centers, whether on the Mycenaean Mainland Mycenae, Tiryns, Pylos, Thebes or at non-Mainland sites controlled by Mycenaean rulers Knossos, Chania. In the case of Pylos, Thebes, and Knossos, tablets were found in palace archives, although at both Pylos and Knossos tablets have also been found in a variety of contexts within the palaces other than special archive rooms.
