Print this page Rural life It’s all there in popular fiction. From Jane Austen in the s, via Charles Dickens’ pictures of mid century London life, to HG Wells’ Time Machine in , the world of literature moved from comedies of country manners to blistering portraits of urban poverty and, finally, time travel. Not bad for odd years. Although the Industrial Revolution had already begun, Britain in had changed little in centuries. It was a rural country, dominated by agriculture. For most, the world was restricted to their village – where their family had probably lived for generations – and the nearest market town, not surprising when the fastest thing on earth was a galloping horse, covering miles a day at best.

If you lived in Somerset, London was almost foreign, much as it had been in You wouldn’t even have been using the same time – with the sun rising around ten minutes later than in London, Bristol clocks ran ten minutes behind. Opened by Sir David Attenborough, the site is the University’s biggest construction project to date and is a significant landmark on the Bristol skyline. The ground-breaking research at the University of Bristol will be supported by a high performing Siemon network, to foster both academic advancement and a sustainable environment. An iconic building now houses the School of Biological Sciences; fully equipped to become one of the UK’s leading facilities for the advancement of Biological Sciences and a range of related disciplines.

The new site is split into three zones, including a five-storey laboratory wing, complete with acoustic chambers, spectroscopy and microscope rooms, clean rooms, a double height plant room and green houses for plant studies. Regeneration Located on St Michael’s Hill in the centre of Bristol, the Life Sciences Building regenerates 13, square metres of space in the heart of the city. The site for the new building used to house disused blocks of the old Children’s Hospital, plus a building from the ‘s and two blocks of houses.

To date, the School of Biological Sciences housed up to 2, occupants in cramped Victorian buildings, dating back to around Site managers realised that a complete new build would prove more cost-effective than refurbishment of existing facilities and allow for progress to be made, not only in the sustainability of the site, but also in the environment for learning.

The new building, with its visually arresting glass atrium, provides outstanding facilities for science teaching and is designed to enhance research-led study and staff-student interaction. Progressive learning The Life Sciences building boasts one of the largest teaching labs in the country, capable of teaching students at once. There are multiple screens to ensure all students can see close-up what the lecturer is doing, plus the new laboratories are fully equipped with notebook computers and cutting edge equipment for microscopy, genetic analysis and environmental monitoring.

The facilities are all specially equipped to support physically and visually impaired students, with all of the benches being wheelchair accessible and white network outlets mounted on grey faceplates to give sufficient contrast to comply with the needs of the visually impaired.

Examined attachment and initial romantic attraction during speed-dating. Abstract Attachment insecurity is generally associated with low romantic attraction from prospective partners. However, no research has examined the pan-cultural applicability of attachment and initial romantic attraction, referring to the extent to which attachment processes are implicated in romantic attraction across cultures. We examined if attachment insecurity influenced initial romantic attraction in the actor and partner, and whether effects were moderated by culture.

Women were less attracted to men high in attachment avoidance irrespective of culture, though attachment anxiety and avoidance were unrelated to male initial romantic attraction. Chinese women were more attracted to men higher in attachment anxiety, whereas attachment anxiety was unrelated to attraction in Western women. The pan-cultural applicability of attachment and romantic attraction is discussed, with particular focus on the extent to which attachment influences romantic attraction across cultures.
